UF roundup: Crimson Tide defeat Gators in close gymnastics meet

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Kiana Winston earned a perfect 10 on the floor exercise Friday to lead No. 6 Alabama over No. 3 Florida, 197.825-197.425, in the Crimson Tide's Power of Pink gymnastic meet.

The Crimson Tide (3-3, 2-2 SEC) closed the night with a season-best 49.625 on the floor exercise. Winston brought the crowd roaring to its feet with a perfect 10, the first of the junior's career and just the third on the floor exercise in the nation this season. Senior Aja Sims closed out the night and the Gators with a 9.95. Freshman Maddie Desch added a 9.925 and junior Guerrero a 9.9 to pace Alabama.

UF junior Rachel Slocum shared the evening's vault title with Guerrero at 9.925. It was Slocum's second vault title as a Gator and the fifth of her collegiate career.

The Gators fell to 4-1 overall, 2-1 in the SEC.

"This was a great experience - in front of a big crowd on the road, tight meet all the way through - and the team will gain from this experience." - Florida coach Jenny Rowland said.


Home Run Derby to

highlight Fan Day

A Home Run Derby headlines Florida Baseball Fan Day at McKethan Stadium starting at noon today.

Following the Home Run Derby, the entire team will be available to sign autographs on the concourse. The Gators will hold an open practice following the event.

Food trucks Cilantro Tacos, Mayflower Cellars and Soup to Nuts will be on hand to provide food and drinks for fans. Representatives from the Gator Ticket Office will be on hand with information about season and single game tickets.

Each player in the home run derby will get 10 swings. The top three hitters from each squad will advance to the semifinals, where they will get five outs (any hit that is not a home run). The top player from each side in the semifinals will advance to the final.round consisting of five outs each.

The Gators open the season with a three-game series against William & Mary Feb. 17-19 at McKethan Stadium.
