NEW HAVEN, Conn. — No. 1 Florida defeated No. 2 North Carolina 4-2 Monday to win the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at Yale.

The clinching match came down to the No. 3 singles court with Florida freshman Ingrid Neel beating UNC sophomore Jessie Aney, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

UF (7-0) won the doubles point behind wins from Anna Danilina-Neel at No. 2 and Belinda Woolcock-Josie Kuhlman at No. 3. Then came singles wins by Neel, Brooke Austin at No. 5 and Kourtney Keegan at No. 6.

The Gators now have won the championship seven times, with the last title coming in 1998-99.

"This has been a long-time coming. We've played well at the Indoors before, but this is a special group," UF coach Roland Thornqvist said. "I had a feeling that we had a chance just by the way we hit the ball. You never know until the very, very end. Credit to our players. They were resilient and our freshman at the end was just remarkable.

"It means a lot to our players, you can tell that. Any time you can bring home a trophy of this kind it means a lot. A lot of hard work goes into it. It's going to be interesting now because we have another huge weekend next weekend at home against the defending national champion and the national runner-up from last year."

The Gators return home for weekend matches against No. 5 Oklahoma State at 4 p.m. Saturday and No. 4 Stanford at noon Sunday.

Eight Gators to NFL Combine

There will be quite a Florida presence at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Eight Gators have been invited to participate — linebacker Alex Anzalone, defensive tackle Caleb Brantley, defensive end Bryan Cox Jr., linebacker Jarrad Davis, safety Marcus Maye, offensive tackle David Sharpe, cornerback Jalen Tabor and cornerback Quincy Wilson.

The Combine is being held in Indianapolis from Feb. 28 to March 6. More than 300 draft-eligible players are expected to participate.

On March 28, the NFL coaches and scouts will be in Gainesville for UF's annual Pro Day, which will be held in the Indoor Practice Facility.

Matchups announced for VERT Challenge

Matchups for the third edition of the VERT Challenge, which features four of the nation's premier programs and will be hosted by Florida in August, were announced Monday by Gators coach Mary Wise.

Florida will face 2016 national runner-up Texas on Friday (Aug. 25) and four-time national champion Nebraska on Saturday (Aug. 26). Oregon, the 2012 national runner-up, rounds out the field and will face Nebraska opening night and Texas the following day.

Florida is 3-1 in the previous two VERT Challenges, having beaten Oregon twice and Texas, 3-1, in 2015. UF's only loss came against No. 1 Nebraska in Eugene, Ore., last year. Nebraska will host the 2018 VERT Challenge.
