NEW ORLEANS - Florida's Mike Holloway was named the National Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Wednesday.
This is the second consecutive honor and fourth in the last six seasons for Holloway, who also earned the award following outdoor national titles in 2012, 2013, and 2016.
After a runner-up finish (by half a point) at the NCAA Indoor Championships, the Gators put together a perfect combination of star and surprising performances to win the NCAA Outdoor Championships by two points. It marked Florida's seventh indoor and outdoor national title in school history-all of which have come since 2010, leading Division I men's programs by two titles during that span.
A look at some more team achievements from this season, as well as additional notes on Holloway:
• Florida's title also marked their 19th top-2 finish in 30 NCAA Championship meets since Holloway became the men's head coach in 2003. No other program has more than nine top-2 finishes in that time frame
•Florida posted its ninth consecutive top-3 finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, tying Arkansas (1992-2000) for the third-longest streak in meet history. Only USC (1933-43, 1946-56) put together a longer streak
• The Gators are the second Division I program since 2000 to win four outdoor national titles in a six-year span
• Florida has finished in the top three at 17 of the last 18 NCAA Championship meets, and 21 of the 30 NCAA Championship meets with Holloway as head coach
• Holloway is the seventh head coach in Division I history to win seven men's NCAA Championships. Holloway is also one of four coaches to win at least seven since 1970
Holloway also helped the Gators to four individual titles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, with junior KeAndre Bates sweeping the long jump and triple jump, fifth-year senior Eric Futch defending his 400 hurdles title, and Grant Holloway becoming the third freshman in history to win the 110 hurdles title.
